MRI RF Coil Terminology

Active High / Active Low | Active High: A coil that can be actively detuned will be on-resonant while pin driver current flows to the coil. Active Low: A coil that can be actively detuned will be on-resonant while no current flows or even when disconnected. Check ParaVision -> Configuration -> RF Coils |
AD or AD2 | Active Detuneable (sometimes named decoupling instead of detuneable), enables Cross Coil Configuration (optimized for Cross Coil operation with minimum compromise when used for reception). |

Array Coil | A RF coil that consists of several elements, typically arranged as one or two dimensional array or ring structure (short ARR). |
Body Coil | A RF coil that allows to image parts of the body of an animal, but not the entire animal. |
Brain Coil | A RF coil that allows to image the brain of an animal, but not the entire head. |
Cross Coil (configuration) | A coil configuration that consists of separate RF coils for transmission and signal detection. |
Head Coil | A RF coil that allows to image the entire head of an animal. |
RF Coil | A single coil that is used in a RF coil configuration. |
RF Coil Configuration | A set of one or more RF coils that are used in a MRI experiment. |
RF Coil Element | One RF channel of a single or multiple element RF coil (array). |
Surface Coil | A RF coil that is placed on the surface and allows to image close to the surface (short: SUC). |
Volume Coil | A RF coil that allows to image typically homogeneously a volume. |
Whole Body Coil | A RF coil that allows to image the entire body of an animal (excluding the tail). |
